Eating healthy is one thing.. a 7 year old on a diet? c’mon.

So I just read an article on Today.com about a woman who put her 7 year old on a diet. While I understand at 7 years old she was considered overweight.. could one propose that her “weight loss” was because she freaking was 7 and grew? According to Children’s Hospital of Stanford, children ages 6-12 on average grow 2.5 inches a year. Not to be judgmental here but what kid wouldn’t grow 5 inches and slim down?

Ridiculous. Teach your kids healthy habits, don’t encourage CHILDREN to go on diets, be smart people. Put down the fast food, the soda and the chips and take your kids outside. Snack on a flipping carrot and call it a day.

Westboro Baptist Church plans on picketing Sandy Hook funerals

As a parent and a resident of Connecticut, the recent shooting in Sandy Hook Ct definitely hits home. As a parent you’d never fathom such violence happening at such an institution let alone to babies.

While all the details are still being released.. One thing is for sure – Westboro Baptist Church is already talking about picketing at the numerous funerals. If you aren’t familiar with this group – head to google. They’re infamous for picketing soldier’s funerals with their hateful propaganda.

Please take a second to click the link and sign a petition to recognize them as a hate group. While I whole heartedly believe in freedom of speech… I also believe grieving a loved one to be sacred.

Dr Oz says we’re part of the 1% because we eat Organic.

I work in an industry populated with people who take every word Dr Oz says to heart. There is no in-between with his show.. either you’re about to die from cancer (he will show you 15 ways how) or he’s showing you super-foods to help protect you from them.  The fear of growing old and getting sick has made this man very VERY wealthy.. and popular.

As of late there has been lots of debate around GMO’s.. Genetically Modified Organisms. In layman’s terms.. food that has been genetically altered in a lab to be heartier, stronger, resist diseases, etc etc. Recently California became the first state to tackle the debate.. IS IT IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO MAKE LABELING MANDATORY? Unfortunately.. it wasn’t. Big companies won this one with barrages of media blitzes. Even going as far as to say there are no health BENEFITS to eating an organic diet. If someone is eating an organic diet because they believe the food is more NUTRITIOUS than they need to do some research. People eat organic because of harmful pesticides AND the fear of GMO’s.

Dr Oz needs to decide which side of the fence he wants to be on:

AGAINST GMO’s -

video part 1

video part 2

video part 3

And then recently in a Times article he disses farmers markets, grass-fed beef and compares eating organic as to being part of the 1%. ”You don’t need to eat like the 1% to eat healthily,” he says. Craziness.  He also goes on to say ”Nutritionally speaking, there is little difference between the farmer’s-market bounty and the humble brick from the freezer case.”

There is a ton of Op Ed pieces coming out now.. pretty interesting.

Natural News

Natural Society

Drudge

We have a family of 5. While a good majority of our paycheck goes towards mostly natural and organic food, I do not feel that my decisions make me an elitist or part of the 1% I buy food from sources I TRUST, sources that are minimally processed and that when available are organic. I support farmers markets because they’re local.. not because they’re healthier. Do I wish we spent less on groceries.. hell yes. Could I shop at our local conventional store for less.. definitely. But I will continue to make natural and organic choices because I want my family to eat the best possible foods. Why would I buy something with tons of artificial additives when a natural version is available for $2 more? To me that’s a no brainer and money well spent.

Kevin Clash accuser recants

Kevin Clash accuser recants

So happy everything turned out to be false. For those who weren’t following.. Kevin Clash- the voice of Elmo- was accused this week of having a relationship with a minor. Since breaking the accuser has recanted his accusations.
Not only are we big fans of Sesame Street, but Kevin Clash seems like a genuinely awesome and caring guy. Watch ‘Being Elmo’.. It’s one of the best movies I’ve watched all year. Finally some decent news!

Is nothing sacred anymore!? Kevin Clash – voice of Elmo accused of inappropriate relationship

is nothing sacred anymore?
For anyone who saw the documentary ‘Being Elmo’, this news is deeply saddening. Elmo aka Kevin Clash is being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor. Based on the info I’ve read so far it seems sketchy at best and nothing really concrete to back it up. One can hope.

I’m gonna twinkle think on this one and hope for kids obsessed with Elmo everywhere that its all untrue!

California’s Prop 37 fails

Here’s the real disappointing outcome of last night. Prop 37 – California’s attempt to make labeling all Genetically Modified foods mandatory – failed. How insane that consumers are ok with feeding their families science experiments. We can only hope this opened up the eyes of other states as to how important this type of legislature is. A sad day for those dedicated to living life naturally.

Tune-In Tuesday! MC Chris – Marshmallow Playground

MC Chris’s Marshmallow Playground is great for those of you fellow parents or parents-to-be that struggle finding music that is kid friendly. Most baby and toddler oriented music makes me want to gag and is so cheery it’s gross. If i’m going to put music on.. I want it to be rockin. And *i* want to enjoy it. However I don’t want my 3 toddlers screaming Fucking Hostile either.

MC Chris isn’t your typical ‘rapper’ per se.. he’s everything nerdcore you’ve been searching for. Having once hailed as an animator for Adult Swim, his lyrics are as colorful and creative. My fav lyrics from Marshmallow Playground are from a song called Halloween – which is all about candy and brushing your teeth! “i shoulda brushed my teeth i got cavities mom and dad said no sugar till halloween”.

We’ve turned this album into an everyday event in our house – We sing at the top of our lungs during ‘Best Day Ever’ – “i love my life – i love my family - i love my house – i love my mom and dad - and i think that this could be the best day ever had”. What parent wouldn’t love hearing their kids sing that! We were super excited to hear his followup album ‘Marshmallow Campground’ is in the works.

Check out his other albums too – MC Chris is dead is my absolute fav with songs like ‘Pizza Butt’ and “Never Give Up featuring Andrew W.K.’!

Foodie Find Friday!

Welcome to our first installment of Foodie Find Friday! Every Friday we will feature some sort of recipe or product for all lovers of food!

Today we feature Blue Donkey Iced Coffee straight out of Atlanta Georgia! We had the pleasure of trying Blue Donkey Iced Coffee light while having lunch at Whole Foods Market Merchants Walk in Marietta GA! Seeing as though I was in town visiting my partner in crime and my new nephew, I’m pretty bummed I can’t buy it in Connecticut!!

For those of you who buy iced coffee in your refrigerated section this one has it beat. Creamy, sweet and the coffee was right on the money. Not too bitter and not too sweet. Needless to say the 8oz coffee didn’t last long. Check out the ingredients in that mocha latte frappe thing you buy. There’s a lot in there huh? Not this one, all natural! No high fructose, no preservatives, artificial anything. What you lovingly sip is what you get. Milk, Coffee & Sugar!

So if you’re ever in their neck of the woods check em out. Maybe if I’m lucky Clare will send some and fill my need!
