Squeasy Snacker – coolest/easiest/awesomest reusable food pouch. EVER.

I’m sure many of you can relate – kids LOVE anything in a pouch.

Applesauce – check.

Spinach mango – check.

quinoa salmon squash etc etc – check.

Kids will eat ANYTHING in a pouch… but it’s just too darn expensive. I can get like 3x the amount of applesauce in bulk than I can in pouches. But guess what.. my three boys ain’t got time for that.

So the solution – Squeasy Snackers! The lovely folks at Squeasy Gear are on the up an up and were kind enough to give me some to review (and to give away..keep reading!)

6ozgreen-2TI’ve seen many designs of reusable food pouches and usually it boils down to ONE thing.. how easy it is to clean. The best part of the Squeasy Snacker is that they’re made from 100% Food Grade Non-Toxic, BPA free, PVC free, Phthalate Free Silicone. You can easily inside-them-out to clean or throw them in the top rack of your dishwasher.

I was hustling out the door one day and decided to just put water in them. The kids thought they were so cool to use. However.. they had to get used to the squeasy-ness. Thankfully it was a hot summer day and they appreciated getting squirted in the face!

The next thing I decided to do was make a smoothie in them. I did our old standby – coconut water, frozen berries, local maple yogurt and bananas! It was chilly and refreshing and a healthy snack.

I mustache you a question …

What are you making your sweetie for Father’s Day???

For Father’s Day this year I decided to make my baby daddy, Brandon, a few candy jars full of his favorites. He has quite the sweet tooth and I thought I’d upgrade his boring Tupperwares full of candy.

I ran out to my local craft store and picked up a few glass jars, some scrapbooking sticker letters and some mustache stickers. Easy peasy!

I cleaned the jars and placed the mustache stickers first. I added a little extra adhesive to these because they were a little bulkier. And then came the daddy’s stache lettering.

I made two of these for him.. One JUST for Reese’s products and the other for miscellaneous treats! I bought bulk full size candy to fill them up!

I also made a quick little one for Brandon’s Dad. He only gets a few treats so I used a jar I had kicking around and threw a few of his favorites in.

This is a super quick and simple project! And next time you’re kicking around at the goodwill look around for some pretty glass jars!

Hope you all enjoy your Father’s Day!!

More than refrigerated cookie dough… Chocolate + Coconut = Immaculate Cupcakes

Sometimes you want tasty confections without wasting away in the kitchen. I’m still waiting for the day we all eat little food pills like in The Jetsons. Since we’re not there yet, we do what we do to eat tasty morsels in small amounts of time. Enter: Immaculate Baking Company! IBC has been making yummy sweets since the early 90’s. The best part is that they’ve partnered with the Non-GMO Project which is a huge win in this household. For those of you that live under a rock GMOs stand for ‘genetically modified organisms’ – basically food that has been bioengineered to be larger, heartier and resistant to pests. I’m not sure about you.. but I don’t want MY family eating food that has been created in a lab. Definitely check out the Non-GMO Project website for more info!

The lovely folks at IBC sent us a care package filled with refrigerated goodies (Check out our latest blog for a recipe for Sausage CinnaSwirls!) including their 2 latest refrigerated cookies: Coconut Macaroons and GLUTEN FREE Peanut Butter cookies!

I decided to kick it up a bit and made:

Immaculate Cupcakes!

Image

1 cup milk alternative, we used Coconut!
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
4oz cup of applesauce
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose unbromated flour
1/3 cup cocoa powder – I used Valrhona
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

1 package Immaculate Baking Coconut Macaroons

——————————————————————-

Preheat oven to 350F. Line muffin cups!

Whisk together the coconut milk and vinegar in a large bowl, and set aside for a few minutes to curdle.

Add the sugar, oil, and vanilla extract to the coconut milk mixture and beat well.

In a separate bowl mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add little by little to the wet ingredients.

Pour tasty looking cupcake batter into liners filling 1/2 way. I experimented adding the coconut macaroons whole or in pieces and hands down adding them whole was WAYYYY more satisfying. Put them in the batter and then top with the remaining batter. You should have enough to make 12 cupcakes!

Bake 20 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Put them on a cool surface and have them cool completely.

For the frosting I made a simple Chocolate Ganache:

8oz Chocolate Chips

1/2 cup heavy cream

Cook the chocolate chips and heavy cream in the top of a double boiler over simmering water until smooth and warm, stirring occasionally. I transferred mine to the refrigerator to help it cool quickly and stiffen up.

Once everything is cooled, frost the cupcakes and garnish with shredded coconut!

TADA! Tasty, decadent cupcakes in a reasonable amount of time!!!

Not your Momma’s house cleaner… well maybe if your mom was a flower child!

So thanks to our multiple buy-in-bulk-and-save memberships we sometimes tend to have a lot of SOMETHING on hand. Right now we’re sitting on a whole heck of a lot of  baking soda and vinegar! Together they make the most AMAZING volcanic eruptions every 3rd grader dreams of. In our case… they are the inspiration we need to DIY something awesome.

Our first oh so easy use – vinegar house hold cleaner. It’s such a no brainer because vinegar has been used for.. well.. forever. Not to mention it’s CHEAP! We got 5 liters for less than $4! We’re not fans of anything that’s made from harsh chemicals, that could harm any living thing and that adds fake smells of floral bouquets.

Why vinegar you ask? Well, vinegar has been proven to kill 90% of most common bacteria. Pretty fab considering it’s safe to use around kids and pets.

All you have to do is grab a mason jar, fill it half way with vinegar. Add some orange peels from that healthy snack you just ate and TADA! In a week or so you will have the most amazing smelling orange vinegar cleaner! Tips: the longer you leave the peels in the stronger it smells, strain out any big chunks of peel that might be floating around, and cut 1:1 with water.

DIY vinegar

Now grab a spray bottle at the local dollar store and you’re in business! Earth friendly and inexpensive to boot!

DIY laundry soap and giveaway!

It’s been almost 6 months that I’ve been making my own laundry detergent and the verdict is in – I LOVE IT! It’s one of the most thrifty changes we’ve made and definitely saves us $$!

The ingredients are easy and the ratios can change. I do equal parts: Arm&Hammer Super Washing Soda, Fels Naptha and Borax. I use1-2 tablespoons per load.

20130728-231235.jpg

I’ve read mixed reviews about how “clean” these ingredients are but I dig em. They get my 3 boys clothes clean! My next batch I might use a Castile soap bar instead of the Fels, just for shits and giggles.

Comment below with your fav cleaning tip for your chance to win your own DIY laundry ingredients to make your own! 1 winner will be randomly chosen to receive 1 box each washing soap and Borax and a couple bars Fels Naptha! Don’t forget your email address! Ends 8/12/13!
